Thought Provoking Thursday: Why You Should Start Your Home Business NOW (guest blogger)

Why You Should Start Your Home Business NOW

When you read that title what comes to mind?

  • I would love to but I’m exhausted.
  • I’m too busy.
  • I’m breastfeeding an infant and I don’t know what kind of business to start!

I totally get you.

For more than six years now I’ve coached moms who went on to start a business after making the same disclaimers only because they were willing to examine the bigger picture.

As homeschooling moms we have a lot to juggle on a day-to-day basis for the children and because of this sometimes we feel overwhelmed and can’t clearly see opportunities.

So here are 4 reasons why you SHOULD start a business now!

  1. You are already home and living on one income.

You don’t have to rush to build your business because you are already surviving on one income. Take your time to learn what you need to learn and grow at your own pace without spending a lot of money up front.

BIZ TIP: Learn to build your own website instead of paying someone hundreds of dollars. Take your time to learn about SEO, branding and building a tribe.

  1. You don’t have to answer to a boss about starting your business.

Many women working a job are censored by a non-compete contract with their company. Some women cannot fully advertise their business via social media for fear that it will get back to their employer. You don’t have to answer to anyone and therefore are free to grow and promote your business without repercussions.

BIZ TIP: Ok, more than likely you have to answer to your spouse and give account of how you spend the family money as you grow your business; but once he’s sold on the idea (and you will have to sell him) at least he is happy about your potential growth.

  1. You will provide your children with significant experience.

Running a business from home teaches your children (and you) about leadership, sales, marketing, people, service, faith, money, sacrificing and a host of other essential skills that are required to be successful in this world.

BIZ TIP: Choose a business that they can actually participate in with you. Let your teenager take a class on computer graphics. Let your pre-teen screen your emails. Teach your pre-schoolers how to seal envelopes and place stamps. My 8 year old girl is my Social Media Assistant, she goes through my Instagram account and like or comment on people’s posts. While we are driving I dictate text messages for her to send out. Yes, *Siri* can do it for me but this gives her a chance to participate.

  1. You will save lots of money.

Come on Lady T, how can I save money when it costs money to start a business? When we think about starting a business we must realistically look at the start-up costs but also remember that there are so many tax benefits that it may be your family’s way of saving money also. With a home-base business a percentage of your home space is tax deductible. Your computer, printer, cell phone, internet service, some of your travel, the books that you buy all may be included as business write-offs.  There were a couple of years when my business didn’t make ANY money but my accountant told me that my business write-offs rescued our family’s tax liability.

BIZ TIP: Find a good accountant who works with small businesses. Fortunately, in our digital world you aren’t limited to your local area.

There you go, 4 good reasons to start your business today! Do it slowly, do it with your family but DO IT.
