To Review Or Not To Review, That is the Question?

As a homeschool parent, I remember being in my children’s position. For instance, as a student I did not understand the concept of why my teacher focused on reviewing information from the previous lesson.

Let’s fast forward to the present, as a homeschool parent, I understand how important it is to review academic subjects on a regular and reoccurring basis. I ask myself these questions.

  1. What is the purpose of my children reviewing the previous lesson?
  2. Why is it so important for me to do this?

In my opinion, the purpose of reviewing a previous lesson will allow my students to reflect on the information that was discussed the previous day; also, it gives students the ability to

review the information again with fresh eyes that will assist with their learning.

In addition to reflecting on the information learned, reviewing the previous lesson is so important for me because I can identify if my children understand the information or if I need to take a different approach based on my children’s learning styles.

For example, my son had a hard time learning how to multiply two digit numbers like 34 x 24=.

He attempted to complete a worksheet independently. He was so confident that he could solve these problems without any guidance.

I have given him an “A” for effort because he was very confident in his ability to complete it himself.

Consequently, after checking his work the results were far from an A, my son realized guidance was needed. As a result, I decided to wait until the next day to review it with him. Reviewing the lesson, we gained the understanding on how he missed the problems on the worksheet and we discussed the best way of solving the problems.

I am proud to say that my son understands how to multiply two digit numbers. I am one proud parent, and I have one happy son.
