I’m sure that each of us can share being frustrated enough to where we’ve spoken harsh words while schooling our children. Or have been agitated enough to snap at our kids (family) with unkind words. Or heated enough to where we released words that we wish we could take back throughout the homeschooling day.
True? Do you agree?
I know each of us can testify to this fact as truth.
I have no advice to give about this ‘disease of the mouth’ and of the heart 🙂 other than sharing and reminding myself of what the Lord speaks to us from His Word regarding this reality.
James 3:6
“But no one can tame the tongue; it is a restless evil and full of deadly poison. With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the likeness of God;…”
I know that that truth seems pretty hopeless.
We just can’t tame our tongues.
But….
Scripture also teaches those who believe, follow and obey Scripture that…..
Proverbs 29:11
“He who restrains his words has knowledge, And he who has a cool spirit is a man of understanding. Even a fool, when he keeps silent, is considered wise; When he closes his lips, he is considered prudent.”
How about if we keep reading the verse that follow.
Proverbs 29:12
“A fool always loses his temper, But a wise man holds it back.”
I guess the reality is that we ‘at that moment when we decide to speak harsh, in agitation, anger’ we are acting like fools. But when we choose to hold back those words……we are being wise.
Yikes…..I don’t like that. 🙁
I know my family and I have been talking about the ‘face’ of wisdom. The last few nights during our family worship time. We have been discussing the ways of gaining wisdom.
It’s only a result of the work of God.
We can’t work hard enough or find ways to become wise. We can work hard to have common sense.
But wisdom is something that only comes from the Lord. We read that a few nights ago from Ecclesiastes. (See Ecclesiastes 7:23)
Seeking Him. Having a ‘holy’ fear of Him.
The focus Scripture we had was from Ecclesiastes 7:9 “Do not be quickly provoked in your spirit, for anger resides in the lap of fools.”
We had great discussion about that.
Well, as we start our year in homeschooling I simply wanted to take this time to exhort us in this area.
Be wise…..hold our tongues.
Ask the Lord for wisdom to do so.
Let’s remember the power we have in our tongues.
It’s a small member of our body but can do great harm.
