I betcha that even reading the words, “Teach Them Wisdom” is not computing for you. Don’t feel that this is odd. It is normal.
Clearly, I can remember when I had a discussion with my Uncle when I was 12 years old about wisdom, being smart and knowledge.
My brain was not comprehending what wisdom was.
At all!
Even to this day I understand it but it’s hard to put into words.
But I’ll give it a shot and then explain why this week’s “Teach Them This Tuesday” is all about Wisdom.
Wisdom goes beyond common sense.
Wisdom is not being smart.
Wisdom is not being intelligent.
Wisdom is not being a certain age. Old. (whatever your kids may think that number may be.)
Wisdom is not having understanding….only.
As I understand it…..WISDOM is having common sense, good judgement, recognizing and doing what is right vs. what is wrong, fore-thought on a situation before engaging in it.
Wrap all that up with DISCERNMENT and you have a beautiful display of wisdom.
Have you heard the saying, “You have wisdom beyond your years.”
Because often wisdom accompanies experience. Experience gained over a period of time.
Over a period of years. Usually.
However, it is possible to find wise children. Even at a young age.
Have you ever had a conversation with a wise child that just blew you away with their insights, articulation and fore-thought?
Shall I add…..WISDOM is indeed a rare commodity now adays.
Students (and adults too) live in the moment.
There is….
No fore-thought.
No discernment.
No common sense.
No good judgement.
No wisdom.
Just act or react.
Lord Chesterfield said to his son:
“Be wiser than other people if you can; but do not tell them so.”
Scripture teaches us this in Proverbs 4:6-7:
“Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you; love her, and she will watch over you. The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding.”
My children will tell you that I always ask them,
“Now was that the wise thing to do.”
“Were you using wisdom when you made that decision.”
Even if my 4 year old has no understanding what wisdom is……he is hearing me ask those questions over and over and over again to him.
I challenge you all this week in “Teach Them This Tuesday” to not only work to impart book knowledge in homeschooling.
But WISDOM as well.
Dig into Scripture to learn what WISDOM is.
The beginning of WISDOM is to GET WISDOM.
Pray for it. Seek it. Recognize it. Desire it.
Make that a part of homeschooling.
I dare say that our future world NEEDS wise adults.
And guess what?
We are raising those WISE adults.
If we teach them what WISDOM is, what it looks like and how to operate in it.
