It’s getting close to that time of year when UCHU – AA will be looking to receive final grades for high school students who are members of the accountability association.
May 31 has been stamped as the day to turn in all final grades for the purpose of class rank and transcripts. This is not SC law but UCHU-AA’s requirement as mode of operation.
Not all of the members of UCHU with high school students desire to have their transcripts completed by Me. By law, transcript completion by me is not a must. It’s a service that I provide.
However, all high schooling families are asked to submit course and grades (rather they’ve purchased the high school package or not) for the purpose of the ranking form that I must submit to the Commissioner of Higher Education by mid June for students qualifying for Palmetto Fellows.
Often parents inquire of me what they should do if they’ve not completed homescholing school by May 31 thus not having the needed information to submit to me.
Well, if this is the case there are a few things you can consider. Here are THREE considerations to ensure your high schools student’s transcript and ranking is ready for UCHU’s May 31 deadline:
- Consider giving your student 1/2 a credit and the grade earned at that point of the required UCHU deadline. The other 1/2 a credit and grade can be put on the transcript the next year. Certainly by May 31 your student should be more than half way through that current subject. For example if the student currently is studying Algebra 2 but has not quite completed the course by May 31 submission deadline to Me, no worries. On the transcript give 1/2 a credit and the current grade for that portion of study. Then next year add the other 1/2 a credit and the second half of the grade for that student. The next homeschool year you may report Algebra 2 and Geometry on the same transcript. This is ok! Just as long as all of the desired or required maths are reported on the transcript.
- Leave that entire course off the transcript until the following year. While it may appear that the student didn’t study a math that year on the transcript just indicate an ‘I’ for incomplete. Then the next year add both completed maths on the transcript at that time with the completed grades earned.
- If 80% of the curriculum is complete then provide the final grade of the course at that time. Required course completion is understood to be at least 80% of the course curriculum. You can always continue to finish up the curriculum after the May 31 deadline but at least you have a final grade to submit. However, 80% curriculum completed is sufficient. To clarify I’m not ‘suggesting’ only completing 80% of your curricula.
Note that all Option 3 accountability associations operate differently. Be sure to check with your Option 3 accountability association if UCHU is not your legal covering.
Additional note, it is not required by law that your Option 3 Accountability Association completes your student’s transcripts. Parent generated transcripts are absolutely permitted.
Final note, while May 31 is the deadline for grade submission for UCHU this is not a date set by South Carolina Option 3 law nor a date that all associations adhere to.
