Have you ever purchased a curriculum and used it the entire year, but you notice that your child is not comprehending the information because he or she finds it difficult to follow?

If your answer is yes, this is my problem with the past curriculum that I choose for my oldest son who is in seventh grade this year.

I have always used Bob Jones English Homeschool Curriculum for my oldest son since he was in second grade. Bob Jones English Homeschool Curriculum is a great curriculum, but it is no longer a great fit for my children learning styles.

However, when he began sixth grade, I noticed that he was

having difficulties grasping some of the concepts. I continued using BJU for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year because he was able to understand some of the topics, but I decided to change English curriculum for the 2020-2021 school year for both of my sons’.

My decision was based on my oldest sons’ English grades. He scored high on some tests but low on majority of tests even after reviewing for a few days. My oldest son is like his Mom. He picks up on some topics easily while other topics will take a while for him to understand.

However, I become frustrated just like him when I continue practicing, practicing, and practicing and I still cannot grasp the concept. This is when a change is needed.

This is why 2020-2021 English curriculum is different. I am using Shurley English Homeschool Curriculum https://www.shurley.com/hs/?583c10bfdbd326ba145bc15183860 Levels 7 (oldest son) and Level 5 (youngest son). I am excited to see if this curriculum is a great fit for my sons’. I have researched it, and I have evaluated my sons’ learning styles (auditory, bodily-kinesthetic, visual, verbal, musical, social learners too).

Why did I choose Shurley curriculum?

I chose Shurley curriculum for several reasons. First, Shurley curriculum provides Jingles for my children to learn the English concepts. I know that my children learn through music. They like to sing-a-long with songs.

Secondly, I chose it because it includes vocabulary, writing, sentence patterns (identify and lable SN (subject noun), V (verb), and editing paragraphs. Vocabulary will allow him an opportunity to increase his vocabulary and improve his writing skills too.

Third, after my sons’ answer a question, they have an opportunity to practice the information learned through a skill test and an application test. The skill test is a review of the information that my son has learned the previous day, and it tests his understanding of the concept. If he has any difficulties with a topic, I can review it the next day.

In addition, the application test provides him an opportunity to apply what he has learned throughout the chapter by answering questions based on topics learned.

Fourth, it provides my child an opportunity to express how he feels about the information that he has learned by writing about it in his journal.

Not only does the curriculum include jingles, vocabulary, and writing, my son has an opportunity to learn word analogy. Word analogy is something as a student that I had difficulties understanding. I want my children to grasp the concepts at an early age. I am so glad this curriculum includes analogies. These are the reasons why I chose Shurley English Curriculum for my sons’. I am excited to see how well the curriculum fits my sons’ learning style.

Have you changed any of your curriculum for the 2020-2021 school year?

Does the new curriculum meet your child’s learning styles better?
